SUMMARY

Kahle, J. B. (1999). Discovering from Discovery: The evaluation of Ohio’s systemic initiative. In N. L. Webb (Ed.), Evaluation of systemic reform in mathematics and science. Synthesis and proceedings of the Fourth Annual NISE Forum (Workshop Report No. 8). Madison: University of Wisconsin, National Institute for Science Education.

This manuscript analyzes Ohio’s systemic initiative to increase student achievement levels in mathematics and science.  A three-tier nested research design was used to examine outcomes as the program was occurring.  The study found that teachers’ professional development activities had a positive impact by increasing standards-based teaching practices, and students’ tests scores were raised, regardless of socioeconomic status.
