Webb, N. L., Cohen, A., &  Kang, Taehoon. (2002). A comparison of SSI and non-SSI performance on state NAEP mathematics assessment items. A paper presented at the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA.

This paper investigates whether curricular effects can be attributed to participation in the Statewide Systemic Initiatives (SSI) program.  Methods used to detect differential item functioning (DIF) usually associated with item-bias were investigated.  Findings indicate that DIF items were present, indicating that a difference exists in the construct being measured by the state NAEP between 1990 and 1996.
